Nice and quiet: acoustic curtains ensure optimum room acoustics and sound insulation

Noise prevention and sound insulation are especially needed in places where many people gather for long periods of time. Examples include educational institutions such as schools and universities, open-plan offices, clinics, exhibition halls, conference rooms, concert halls or theatre auditoriums. Sound-absorbing acoustic curtains can turn a noisy office nightmare into quiet islands of productivity. And on top of that, the curtains can look really good and even improve the air in the room.

If you want to buy acoustic curtains, you need a different solution depending on the room - this is where our acoustic curtains come into play. The necessary corrections to the room acoustics can be made inexpensively and easily with the individually fitting acoustic curtains. We offer a large selection of outstanding designs. With our all-round service, we support you in the selection, planning and installation of your acoustic curtain.

The acoustics behind the curtain: what we are talking about when we talk about sounds

Good acoustics is not only a question of quality of life, but also a question of health. Not only because high noise emissions can make us ill. But also because in acoustically optimised rooms, well-being and productivity improve tremendously. In order to better explain what our acoustic curtains achieve, we provide a small digression on the subject of acoustics here.

Noise, sound, sounds - anyone thinking about acoustic room correction should know what sound is and how it behaves. "Sound" is the term used to describe the propagation of minute pressure fluctuations in an elastic medium. Our hearing converts these pressure differences into electrical signals that our brain processes and: we hear something. A distinction is made between five types of sound events:

  • Tone: a periodic and sinusoidal vibration (e.g. tuning fork).
  • Sound: a non-sinusoidal periodic oscillation (e.g. violin sound).
  • Noise: an irregular vibration (e.g. speech).
  • Bang: an irregular vibration with a large initial impulse (e.g. rifle shot).
  • Noise: due to the structure (usually loudness), disturbing, stressful or harmful noise

For sound to propagate, the vibration must be transported through an elastic medium. This can be air, water or iron, for example. This propagating pressure fluctuation is called a sound wave. How fast a sound wave travels depends on the medium and temperature. In air at 20 degrees Celsius, the speed of sound is 343 m/s.

It gets really interesting with the volume. This is determined with the help of the sound pressure and the sound pressure level is indicated with the unit decibel.

Whoever hears decibels quickly thinks of noise, airports and jets. With these examples, we are already close to our pain threshold of 130 decibels (dB). But there is a lot before that. Here are a few examples:

  • Rifle shot at 1 m distance: 130 dB
  • Jet aircraft test run: 120 dB
  • Rock concert, disco: 110 dB
  • Pneumatic hammer, circular saw: 100 dB
  • Motorbike: 90 dB
  • Main road during the day: 70 dB
  • Normal conversation: 50 dB
  • Quiet library: 40 dB
  • Ticking alarm clock: 30 dB
  • Normal breathing: 10 dB

By the way: Baby cries can be as loud as a jet: up to 120 dB are possible. From 85 dB, hearing protection should be worn at the workplace, because from 85 dB hearing damage to the ear of the person affected is possible, from 120 even after a short time. Above 65 dB, the risk of cardiovascular diseases increases, above 45, learning and concentration disorders can occur, and above 35 dB, sleep disorders. So even a ticking alarm clock could be the source of your restless sleep.

A doubling of the perceived volume corresponds to about +10 dB. If you want to create a separate room in an open-plan office, you can achieve sound insulation of 26 dB with the Office acoustic sound curtains. This turns an open-plan office with the noise of a main road into a quiet library that encourages colleagues to whisper rather than shout. Would you like something like this in your office? Room acoustics: What our acoustic curtains do indoors

If it is too loud, it has one of two causes: Either disturbing sound penetrates the room from outside, or unwanted sound spreads unpleasantly inside the room. In the first case, we are talking about building acoustics, in the second about room acoustics. And especially indoors, you can make a big difference to the acoustics with curtains. The movable sound-absorbing screens create flexible room acoustics, offer a wide variety of usage scenarios from concert halls to offices, and shine with their captivating appearance. Especially transparent acoustic textiles allow for inspiring creative design. With us, you always get a good acoustic curtain price.

The reverberation of a room can be controlled with sound-absorbing acoustic curtains, for example with an acoustic curtain made of molleton fabric. With a shorter reverberation, speech intelligibility improves, thus increasing concentration and comprehension. For music performances, the flexible acoustic curtains can then be retracted, thus lengthening the reverberation again.

Our highlights among the acoustic absorbers

Acoustic Absorber Light: The translucent acoustic fabric

The perfect blend of light-filled spaces and flawless acoustics. The Absorber Light is a transparent acoustic curtain - a translucent yet highly absorbent fabric that uses micro-slits in the fabric to absorb sound. The Acoustic Absorber Light should always be used at a distance of about 10-30 cm in front of a sound-reflecting surface (e.g. window front). This acoustic curtain is the best choice when rooms need to be bright and acoustically optimised. This is why it is ideal for offices, galleries, foyers, rehearsal rooms and museums.

Acoustic Absorber CS: The professional acoustic fabric

Together with musicians, theatre managers and an acoustics institute, we have developed a completely new sound-absorbing acoustic curtain, the Akustik Absorber CS. The acoustically highly effective fabric is used in concert halls, theatres, opera houses, conference rooms or sound studios and reduces the reverberation time. A lower reverberation time means better speech intelligibility and comfort in the room. With its high weight per unit area of approx. 560 g/m², Absorber CS is considered "highly absorbent" and is one of the top performers in sound insulation with acoustic curtains.

Sound insulation: Create islands of tranquillity with acoustic curtains

If you partition off an area in an open-plan office to hold discussions, then you need sound insulation against penetrating noise from outside. Because acoustic curtains have to meet different requirements here than in the Room Acoustics we at Gerriets have special solutions for this. Whether you want to separate work areas or create quiet meeting islands - our sound curtains offer the complete range of configuration options. 3, 5 or 7 layers, single-colour or elaborately printed visible side, manual automated operation - the Office sound curtain adapts individually to your wishes. This is how rooms are created at the touch of a button.

Our employees are there to help you with any questions you may have: if, for example, you are an architect, office planner, interior designer or acoustic planner who wants to work with acoustic curtains on a project, then we will advise you on the planning and support you in the implementation.

Acoustics in motion: track systems and drive mechanisms

The Office sound curtain can be moved by hand or by motor. If you want the machine to do it for you, you will hear almost nothing: Our Friction-Drive pull motor is extremely quiet. You can control your acoustic curtain with a remote control, with the BUS system or via a touch panel. The track system that carries the load for you is light, quiet and reliable.

TRUMPF 95 is the universal theatre classic among curtain tracks for medium-weight fabrics and scenery. The track system is multifunctional, reliable, light and quiet. TRUMPF 95 has a groove channel for a wide variety of fastening solutions. The system is mainly used in the stage and studio area as well as for complex rail guides with curves and switches.

By means of the friction drive motor, the acoustic curtain parts are moved without a pull cord. The motor moves almost silently along the rail with the help of a drive wheel. The objects to be pulled (curtains, scenery, etc.) are attached directly to the drive unit. This allows for long and complex track runs, up to and including endless runs. With multi-layer acoustic curtains, such as the Office sound curtain, the friction drive can be cleverly hidden between the curtain layers so that the acoustic curtain can be moved without a visible drive unit or ropes.

Are you interested in the friction drive? Just come to us and we will put together the best solution together.

ELEGANCE is the inconspicuous, slim curtain track and therefore ideal for filigree solutions in the architectural sector. It is a single or double track profile for the contract sector with internal runners and internal cable guide. Also available with Softtouch motor especially for the contract sector. With this drive, a light pull on the curtain fabric is enough and the motor then opens and closes the curtain automatically. Perfect for large curtain systems where complicated controls are not required.

Do you need a more individual solution? We have many more rail and drive systems on offer. You can find an overview of our entire repertoire of stage technology and rail systems here. here.
